    Wow, if that’s sugar then I’m super impressed by how close you got! I would have guessed it was some sort of gummy candy, haha.

    If you guessed sugar…you’re pretty close. It’s turbinado sugar to be exact – marketed as Sugar in the raw here in the US.

    Here is the nitty-gritty information on how this was shot.

    Mounted reverse ring adapter on D70 and reverse mounted my Craig’s list bought Nikon 28mm manual lens to D70. Now everything is manual from this point. Originally had the lens set to f/2.8 to set the focus and started moving the camera back and forth until the focus was set – the real pain with the reverse mount setup was setting up the focus. Things go out of focus within few milli-meters. I had real touble getting the right focus, as by the time I got the focus locked and camera set on tripod – everything was out of focus. So had to take multiple shots. Later changed the fv to f/16 to get the details on the sugar crystals.
    I think the macro on this is at about 2:1
